One year ago today the metal world (and world in general) lost an amazing vocalist and human being- Ronnie James Dio. Dio was not only one of the most respected musicians in the rock and metal community, but also in the world of music as a whole. His influences reached all genres and his larger than life persona left a footprint in music that will last for generations to come.
Ronnie’s musical legacy began with Elf and continued to soar on with the legendary Rainbow. From here Dio joined up with Black Sabbath and later went on to form Heaven Hell with the three metal icons. Even with all these great bands in his history, Dio is most likely best known for his astonishing work with the band of his own name, Dio.
As well as being heralded as one of (if not the) most powerful voice in heavy metal, Dio is also widely credited with the invention of the ‘devil horns’ hand gesture that we all use today. His influence on music is undeniable and he will always be in our hearts.
Below is one of Dio’s very last interviews, from the black carpet of the Golden Gods Awards 2010. His amazing spirit shines strong through his final days.
Dio’s wife, Wendy Dio, set up the Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund in honor of Ronnie. To donate please click here.
Ronnie James Dio. Rest in Peace.
