TIM ‘RIPPER’ OWENS: ‘I’m Not Sure If LEMMY Will Ever Die’

TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS: 'I'm Not Sure If LEMMY Will Ever Die'J. Thorn recently conducted an interview with powerhouse vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens (DIO DISCIPLES, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

J. Thorn: What’s it like playing in DIO DISCIPLES?

Owens: It’s an honor. It’s emotional every night. I feel it every time I step on the stage. There’s something special about playing with Ronnie‘s [James Dio] bandmates and I was his friend. Wendy [Dio, Ronnie's widow/manager] is such a great person and Ronnie was a great person, so it feels even more special. It’s really an honor to be able to do it.

J. Thorn: News from Wacken [Open Air festival in Germany] and whispers in the heavy metal world indicate that Lemmy [MOTÖRHEAD] is in rapidly declining health. The bands that came from the ’70s, like MOTÖRHEAD and JUDAS PRIEST, are getting older. In your opinion, what’s the future of heavy metal? Where’s it headed?

Owens: Metal is in good hands. It’s a shame now, but guys like Lemmy have laid the groundwork. People will always dislike change, but it’s still metal. There weren’t a lot of bands like PRIEST before PRIEST, and when they started, people probably didn’t like them, didn’t like that style of music. Bands like IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, and BLACK SABBATH — they’ve laid the groundwork for newer bands. Bands like DISTURBED — which I like because I think they have a lot of old-school influences and they’re at the top of the charts when they release a record, and it’s nice to see that. But I’m not sure if Lemmy will ever die. He’s been in “declining health” for about 20 years, right? Lemmy is a machine… But that’ll be a sad day. Seems like [Tony] Iommi [BLACK SABBATH guitarit] came back from his cancer scare. I think we’ll be alright. These guys have laid the groundwork and every band you see is influenced in some way by Lemmy or these other guys, so we’ll be okay.

J. Thorn: Do you think we’ll end up with “heavy metal franchising,” like Gene Simmons used to talk about? Imagine each city having their own KISS franchise with the KISS seal of approval, playing all the songs people love so that the “band” lives beyond the original members. Is that viable?

Owens: I don’t know if we’re very far from that now. FOREIGNER was out not too long ago without one original member in the band. But it’s hard to say. Bands like MOTÖRHEAD can’t continue without Lemmy. Some bands can’t continue. With PRIEST, I was able to come in but it still really didn’t go on without Rob Halford. It was a different situation. If anybody were to try a “heavy metal franchise,” it would definitely be KISS. Nobody would like it, but they would try it, because they just need to put the musicians in make-up and maybe get away with it. I’d go watch it. You already got MINI KISS out there.

CRAIG GOLDY Says DIO DISCIPLES Is ‘Really Not A For-Profit Thing’

Dave Reffett of GuitarWorld.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist Craig Goldy. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

GuitarWorld.com: How did the idea for the DIO DISCIPLES come about?

Craig: Ronnie [James Dio] was family to us, and he was family to me. When a main family member passes away, the family members left behind often a couple of times throughout the year, try to keep the loved one’s memory alive. Ronnie was family to the whole world, so there was a long mourning and grieving process. During that time, there were a lot of tributes to Ronnie, with a lot of bands coming out, doing stuff. Some of them had good hearts and good intentions. Others had no business to do it and were just taking advantage of it. At one point, we were talking about it, saying, “You know, we really should do something.” So Wendy [Dio, Ronnie's manager and wife], Simon Wright [DIO DISCIPLES/ex-DIO drummer] and I sat down and talked and said, “OK, it’s time.” We wanted to make sure it was done in the most respectful way; that’s how it all started.

GuitarWorld.com: What do you think when people are not happy about these types of tributes?

Craig: I understand it, because Ronnie was so revered that there are going to be people who are apprehensive of what we’re doing. It’s really not a for-profit thing. If people think it’s a for-profit thing, I have no problem with them checking my bank account balance. [laughs] I mean, we’re barely squeaking by over our expenses. It’s very expensive to do this kind of thing. There is money involved, but money is not the priority. The priority is to make sure Ronnie‘s memory is kept alive. Even if we did nothing, he was so loved around the world that there are people who will always remember him, but if we just left alone and did nothing, these special moments with the band and the crowd would not have happened. So many people have come backstage to us and said, “That was the greatest experience ever,” and that’s what we say about this. It’s not really a concert, it’s an experience. Ronnie and his music were so loved that it became such a huge part of people’s lives. The songs we’re playing have been a huge part of people’s lives for decades. It really means something to them.

GuitarWorld.com: What’s the most important you learned from Ronnie?

Craig: There are so many, but a lot of it is first the music has to feel good. The groove has to be great because a lot of guitar players write for the riff first. The way he wrote songs was special too, because he really toiled. The law of hit songwriting is melody first, lyrics second. A lot of people don’t do that, a lot of singers sit around with their notebooks filled with lyrics and they try to cram their lyrics into a song. So the two have already been sitting around collecting dust and they try to call it an original song. That’s not the way you do it. You’ve got to start from scratch. He would really toil because it’s hard to tell a story and hit people in the heart with the limited amount of syllables you have in a song. It’s not an easy task, but I watched him do that and I learned from him. There is going to be some original material coming out, and I have a song about Ronnie‘s passing and how the band feels and how the fans might feel, and it’s coming out really good. When Wendy heard it, she said, “Ronnie would be really proud of you.”

DIO DISCIPLES: Pro-Shot Footage From U.K.’s BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR Festival

Professionally filmed video footage of DIO DISCIPLES‘ August 10 performance at this year’s edition of the Bloodstock Open Air festival at Catton Park, Derbyshire in the United Kingdom can be seen below.

DIO DISCIPLES is the project featuring former DIO members Simon Wright (drums), Craig Goldy (guitar), Scott Warren (keyboards) and Rudy Sarzo alongside singers Tim “Ripper” Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) and Toby Jepson (LITTLE ANGELS, GUN). The group pays tribute to the Ronnie James Dio and is fully supported by Dio‘s widow/manager, Wendy, who has said, “There will never be another Ronnie, but we want to keep his music alive and hope you will support the band and become one of the DIO DISCIPLES.”

Sarzo was unable to take part in DIO DISCIPLES‘ recent European tour and was once again temporarily replaced by James Lomenzo (MEGADETH, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, WHITE LION).

In an interview with Metal Assault, Simon stated about how DIO DISCIPLES was conceived, “I think it was a combination of all of us. We talked long and hard and discussed ‘Should we or shouldn’t we? Is it right? How do we really feel about all this?’ And it just became apparent that we just couldn’t let it go. We’ve been in Ronnie‘s band for such a long time and he taught us so much, he was an inspiration and we learned so much from him about being on the road, being in the studio… We just came to the conclusion that we just couldn’t let it go and we needed to keep the songs going for the fans; that’s the most important thing we’re doing here. We’re not trying to kid anybody here; we’re just doing it from the heart and continuing his legacy. It’s really as simple as that.”

On the topic of DIO DISCIPLES setlist, Simon said, “The problem that a lot of bands have is that they’ve got a strong batch of hits, so we still have to do songs that are like that — we have to do ‘Heaven And Hell’, ‘Rainbow In The Dark’, ‘Holy Diver’, ‘We Rock’… So we’re doing those, but we’re trying to throw in as many curveballs as we can at the moment. As we progress, I think we’ll be throwing in more songs from Ronnie‘s catalog, which should be a couple of surprises — songs that maybe were never played live, or that were played live but a long, long time ago. Because, like I said before, we wanna make it something special for the fans and they all have everything different songs that they love. We can’t do them all, but we’re gonna try and fit as many of them in as we can.”

DIO DISCIPLES is currently touring the U.S. with a slightly altered lineup, featuring Oni Logan (LYNCH MOB) on vocals instead of Jepson and Bjorn Englen (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) stepping in on bass.
